Guest Visitors in 2017

A relatively new feature at Horizons on specified Thursdays in 2017 was the occasional Guest Visitor, organised by the indefatigable Sue Watkinson.  This typically is a representative of an organisation providing information of relevance  (usually local) to the  U3A membership.

Here are some of the interesting and informative visitors we met in 2017:

April 27: Philip Walker, Manager of the West Lancs Dial-a-Ride organisation. If you missed the useful and interesting talk from Philip or didn’t manage to visit his stand at Horizons, then please refer to our website News Report on Dial a Ride.

June 1: Our Guest at Horizons on this date is Amanda Boult,  from the Alzheimer’s Support Group.  Do come and talk to her about anything that concerns you about friends, neighbours or your family during the Horizons meeting from 9.30 to 11.30 a.m. at the Scout & Guide HQ.  This visit will be followed by a longer training session at a date to be arranged.

Members interested in this topic may also want to check out this information on Dementia Awareness Week which takes place in May this year

July 20: Our guests at Horizons will be representatives of Home Start, a local charity that supports young parents and helps them to provide better lives for their children.  Ruth Melling is one of our members and will be on hand to answer any questions about this important work.  Come along and speak to her to find out more.

September 28: West Lancashire Carers Support

This is a local NHS funded support service for unpaid, family carers who are looking after someone and in need of information, access to services and help with their caring role. They are able to signpost and refer to formal services as well as provide a listening ear to those who may be struggling with their own health as well as the person they care for.

More information can be found at http://www.wlcvs.org/carers-health-education-awareness/ or by contacting us on carers@wlcvs.org / 01695 733737

If you or someone you know needs help then do please come along and speak to Sarah.

October 12:  Philippa Marr is a member of the physiotherapy team from the Orthopaedic Department of Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.  She is coming along to Horizons on this Thursday to promote the support that is given to joint replacement patients both before and after surgery.  She will speak to anyone who has concerns for themselves, their family members or friends.

November 9: We welcome Brian Pilling who will bring details of the weekend concerts at Parbold Village Hall for the Douglas Music Society.  This venue hosts international performers and the variety of music ranges from classical to folk to brass.  Come along and talk to him and find out what surprises are in store for concert goers.
